Season 1 Episode 55: The New England Vampire Epidemic

The New England Vampire Epidemic

March 19, 1892

On March 19, 1892, the Evening Herald of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania printed a story describing what it called a “horrible superstition.”

A family in Rhode Island had been suffering from a terrible disease which at the time was called “Consumption” due to the way the ill wasted away. Although they did the best they could to manage the disease, all but two of the families members survived.

Desperate for an answer, the two turned to a local folklore belief that said when members of the same family passed away due to consumption it was due to a diseased loved one draining their life force from beyond the grave.

The solution at the time is still heralded to this day as one of the most macabre and insane remedies of modern times. The family would dig up the bodies…

And burn the organs

Season 1 Episode 52: Aokigahara, The Suicide Forest

Aokigahara, The Suicide Forest

Present Day

On the isle of Honshū lies one of Japans most majestic and beautiful natural creations. I am talking of course about the legendary Mount Fuji. An almost 13,000 foot high volcano, Mount Fuji has been a popular destination for tourists and native Japanese alike for hundreds of years.

But like many things in life, some times beauty comes with a macabre cost. Nestled at the northwestern flank of Mount Fuji lies a truly horrific and somber locale: The Aokigahara Forest. The Aokigahara, also known as “The Sea of Trees” is a forest that has grown over the course of centuries from the remains of volcanic lava plateaus. This unique combinations of forestry and lava bedding create a place that is both unnaturally dark and eerily silent. While these conditions alone are enough to frighten the feint of heart, what is more chilling is what the forest is notorious for…
