Season 1 Episode 38: The Mystery of the Carroll A. Deering

The Mystery of the Carroll A. Deering

January 31, 1921

C. P. Brady, a member of the coast guard, was on lookout duty on the morning of January 31st, 1921. Brady noticed that a boat had run ashore in the Diamond Shoals, a common sight for shipwrecks and known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”. The boat in question was the Carroll A. Deering, a five-masted commercial schooner destined for Rio De Janeiro.

Once bad weather subsided days later, rescue boats managed to reach the Deering but found no sign of any occupants. In fact, the last known communication from anyone onboard the Deering was on January 28th by the Cape Lookout Lightship off North Carolina. The lightship keeper, Captain Jacobson, reported the crew milling about the deck oddly just days before the wreck.

Even more interesting is the fact that the path of the Deering took them to a place known all too well by seafaring folk…
