The Great Dancing Epidemic
July 1518
In the city of Strasbourg (now modern day France) a woman named Frau Troffea walked into the street and began to twist and shake silently and uncontrollably. This macabre dance continued for over a week and in that time others had joined her to writhe about in the town square.
While dancing is usually known as a cathartic and enjoyable act, this specific case was much darker. By August 1518, this strange dancing plague had overcome hundreds of residents…
and claimed as many as four hundred victims
